The question of how bacteria move, sense and react to their surroundings is the common thread running through the research activities in the Scharf Lab. Many bacteria are propelled by means of rotating flagella, driven by a self-assembling nanomachine. Our research is mainly concerned with the ability of bacteria to move towards a favorable environment by sensing nutrients and host signals.
